                                               Weight Limits

TO ALL RUM RACERS:

You have probably heard by now of the Rating Committee's decision to impose crew weight limits on the boats racing in the area.  The weight limits are shown below.  Please note that the limit is on weight; the number of crew is for reference only. Two 90 pound kids are equal to one 180 pound adult for weight limit purposes.

Weight Limits

Crew weight limits are established by the table below, and are based upon the number of crew members that would normally fit on
a boat of a certain length with an average weight of 180 lbs per person.  The Crew Number in the table of weight limits
is provided for reference only; the number of crew members is not limited, only the overall crew weight.

If you are sailing under a One Design Rating that establishes its own crew weight limits, then the crew weight limits of the
One Design Rating shall override the crew weight limits established herein.

                                                                    ********************************************************************

As always, we will sail by the rules.  As always, we will excercise good sportsmanship.  We all know the difference between loading up the boat with every warm body in a hundred-yard radius on a windy day, versus picking up a couple of extra people who just want a ride, regardless of the day.  I think that in general, this will be a good thing.  I have several times seen one boat with a huge gang aboard while another is looking for enough crew to get out and sail.  Let's concentrate more on keeping the sailing fair and less on winning.

In the Rating Comittee meeting, I found out that I had been under-valuing the effect of weight on the rail.  I have always felt
that if I am sailing light, I might lose a little upwind, but make it up downwind.  I find that this is not so, so I am going to work harder at sailing Skimmer nearer max weight.  This means that I hope to find more people that just want to ride along
and learn what this sailboat racing is all about.

See you on the water.
